It´s been a rainy week in the Algarve with heavy flooding in our town as well as neighbouring cities. And all that, after we had almost 7 months of no rain at all. In a new study published in cell reports conducted at the NIH found that variations in the BDNF gene may influence obesity in adults and children. The scientists report that the variant (C-allele) causes the lower production of the BDNF gene which is linked to appetite regulation in the brain. C-allele carriers had higher BMI´s and higher body fat %. High levels of the protein leads to a feeling of fullness. They report that boosting BDNF levels in especially African-Americans and Hispanics may be a therapeutic strategy.
