Mariëtte Abrahams -Nutrition business consultant & Dietitian.
I completed my Bachelors degree in Nutrition & Dietetics at Stellenbosch University in South Africa (a while ago).
My first job was in Food service management, needless to say I did not last long…. I then went to the UK where I worked as a Dietitian in the National health service (NHS) in various clinical roles. Fast forward six and a half years later, l Ieft as a specialist Gastroenterology dietitian, gaining experience in managing a department of specialist dietitians as well as managing patients with various gastrointestinal and surgical issues. I also squeezed in the time to complete a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) and run a private practice. After a very short stint travelling in South-America, I then joined a major medical nutrition company as a Medical and Scientific Affairs Advisor specialising in Gastroenterology & Paediatrics and gaining experience in marketing, training, event management, regulation and medical nutrition.
My Interest, Goals and favourite things
Since I was young, I´ve always had a passion for health, food and learning and approaching problems from new angles. My life experience has shown me that in order to stand out from the crowd, you have to move out of your comfort zone, take risks, create something new, but always stay true to who you really are.
My clinical experience has taught me, that good expert advice should be accessible to all, however the “One-size fits all” approach no longer works and certainly does not improve motivation levels for long-lasting behaviour change. I don´t believe in diets, but I do believe in a whole-food approach and personalization of nutrition advice using the latest in technology. Ever since I dealt with Crohn´s disease patients in the clinical setting, I always wondered how genes and diet could interact to cause or worsen flare-ups. This made me curious to investigate the new area of Nutritional Genomics, which was not called that at the time. I took up further training in Nutritional Genomics at the European Nutrigenomics Organisation and in South-Africa and set up Mariette Abrahams consulting in early 2011, providing gene-based personalised nutrition services to clients and providing technical consulting services to start-ups. I´ve since also started on my PhD journey and learning new things every day. I´m so thrilled to be part of this Genomic era, the opportunities are endless and I feel registered healthcare and nutrition professionals have an important role to play in ensuring that the science is translated accurately and consistently.
My mission for the consultancy is to become the go-to resource for industry looking for strategic, business, product development or training support. To provide quality education on nutritional genomics & personalized nutrition to other healthcare professionals, and to ensure that accurate information about the science is shared with the public.
